The ski team laid their lungs on the line yesterday in Duntroon at the WOSSAA Nordic Ski Championships. Most athletes agreed that the first 1.5 km uphill portion was challenging, but allowed for an easier second half of the course.
Lydia Taylor placed first individually in the junior girls category, the first Junior Salukis to cross the line after racing 3.5km. Lili Smith took the bronze medal with Jaden Deboer, and Kaitie Gratton helping to secure a gold medal as a team. Then they flew in the relay event, also placing first. All four members including Melanie Martin will advance on to OFSAA.
Grace Hutton secured the silver individual medal completing her 6km race, with her teammates Hazel Taylor, Jenna Dufton, Vanessa Vernooy and Emily Vink hot on her heels finishing second place as a team. The girls were hungry to advance to OFSAA, so in the relay, these girls turned on the rockets to obtain the silver medal the 4x800m sprint.
The Senior Boys, battled through their tough 7.5 km event. Joe Hutton pulled it together to win the event giggling across the finish line. Teammates Liam DeNeve, Jarod Medd, Mackenzie Forman and Sam Bolton filled in the gaps to allow the team to win the team event and capture the gold in the relay too. Sean Slater snuck in to the overall individual standings to advance to OFSAA as well.
In the Junior Boys category, there was little doubt that Ethan Aarts would handily win. What followed was anything but miraculous. Jake Littlejohn was 2nd, Adam DeNeve, 3rd, Scott Standeaven, 4th, Owen Wrigley, 5th, Curtis Taylor 6th and Carter Reid 8th. The boys secured the gold medal win as well as the silver!
To sum this up, the DCVI team won 3 individual titles, 3 team titles and both the overall Junior and Senior titles.
Congratulations and good luck to the 26 team members that qualified for OFSAA which is held in Duntroon next week.
